I close the moonroof on my 2006 530i and everything is fine. Then about 20 seconds later I hear a loud bang. I still haven't got used to it because it comes so much later after closing it. It almost sounds like something hitting the moonroof glass.

Dealer is no help.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

you did tell the dealer about this, and they didn't have any idea. is that what you're saying?

I don't have this kinda problem in my car.

I had one in my 3 series, but it's only about the moonroof cover.

I hope others can help you..

Good Luck..

i had that kind of "bang" sound as i open/close my moonroof before. at that time, i just went to the dealer and had them open/close it for themselves and they replaced the whole moonroof as under warranty. ever since then, moonroof works perfectly fine while working quietly.

Mine rattles when I pop the moonroof up. It has this annoying rattling sound. My E39 had the same problem. BMW moonroofs suck.

Are you saying the dealer can't replicate the problem or refuses to do anything about it?

I assume a 'moon' roof in the USA is the same as our 'sun' roof in europe?

I always thought the opening in the roof was to allow the sunshine in, never tried allowing the moonshine in hmmmm terminology.

The clunk sounds like mis alignment of the gearing/motor causing it to 'bang'/'clunk' into it's final resting position, does your roof open fully ? the reason i ask is that should it be tight at one end of it's travel it may be short on the other.

Hoping this makes sense... it was a problem i had many years ago on a Ford Mondeo.

The dealer can replicate the problem but they can't figure out the cause. (see a later post that is hopefully the solution)
