My Ride: E61 525iA Build 2004/08. "Safirschwartz Metallic". Navi Pro, Adaptive Headlights, Bi-Xenon, Panorama Sunroof etc... CIP 18.00.01 (No noticed bug)

Do anybody have a clue what's the relation between model year and production date? My E61 is for example produced 08/2004, but it's supposed to be 2005 model. At what time of the year is "next year's" model delivered? As I understand it, 2006 models ar beeing delivered since some months.

In US, new model year starts in September. In Europe it starts 01/01, correct me if I'm wrong.

In the USA, the 530i I purchased in July 05 that was built in March 05 or later is a 2006 model. If it was a 545i it would still be a 2005 model. This was due mainly to the new 3-liter motors that BMW introduced as of March 2005.

Normally, BMWs do model changes as of August when they change production years and those cars get the next year model designation. So, for example, if you buy a car this October that was built in September 2005 it will be a 2006 model.

In my opinion, your car would be a 2005 model but I'm not sure if in Sweden you use model years. In Germany, they only go by the first date of registration. Model years are not really a factor but most people know that a car with a September or later build date have the newest updates.

BMW dealers states that MY change is done in September. But seems not to be a fixed day for the MY change, it's stated in the registration papers wich model the car got. You can easiest see the MY by comparing the options list.

We used to have modelyear as same as mafnufacturing year in Sweden, but after EU we have MY and registration date.

One should see the differance in the BMW MY, registration MY and of course the US weird system. And I belive the UK has its own system with their reg. plates?

The new BMW MY starts in September, when the new features for MY 2006 are going into manufacturing (Sept. '05 new V8's etc.).
Usually BMW makes other changes in their cars in March (Mar. '05 new R6 N52 engines instead of the old M54).
Some smaller changes are made all the time, because BMW constantly develops their cars.

I suppose in Sweden and Finland the cars MY starts the first of January each year.
In the US as bobr2001 wrote.
It would be nice the hear from the U.K. guys how their system works.
