However, it doesn't specifically address the content of ethanol and/or higher sulfur in gasoline, both of which according to a number of tribology websites is the reason LL-04 is not to be used in gasoline engines outside of EU.

According to one site, the presence of high sulfur quickly cannibalizes some of the sacrificial additives and in turn rapidly depletes the already lower TBN in LL-04 oils.

It is possible that if the drain interval were relatively low (say 5K miles) and the number of engine hours were low (reflecting mostly highway driving) the LL-04 could be acceptable, still having enough additives left to be doing its job. But I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig with my BMW engine.

I also use M1 0W-40 Euro with Hengst filter.
Slightly off-topic but what is special with Hengst filter mate? I always thought BMW oem filters are the best, aren't they?

I have spoken to Stan@eco-tune who is supplying my dpf off kit and he said no worries with LL01 or LL04, they only matter if you have DPF.

Hengst is one of the suppliers to BMW for OE filters.

Interesting. Did he say why a particulate filter adversely affects the LL-04?

Speaking of Hengst oil filters, for those of you located in the Atlanta/Marietta, GA area, I found a place with the best prices around (including EBay and Internet) they are:

Automobile Atlanta, Inc.
505 S Marietta Parkway SE
Marietta GA 30060

800-792-4944
770-427-2844

Hengst E203H D67 Oil Filter: $9.26 ea out the door.

They're a Porsche repair shop who also has access to BMW parts.
