The E60 has a sensor in the oil pan which monitors the amount of antiwear additive left. Consumption of antiwear additive correlates with sludge build-up. It is, in effect, providing an onboard oil analysis for free. Previous BMW's (such as the E39) monitored fuel consumption, the assumption being that very hard driving, or conversely driving a lot in city traffic, both of which would result in low gas mileage, would also be indices of oil contamination and additive deterioration. The system in the E60 would seem to be more precise, and would also take the quality of the oil fill into consideration. There is probably nothing to be gained by changing the oil more often.

Thanks for the good information, Henry. I was only familiar with the E39 fuel issue. What you say is comforting. Could you share your source?

Also, for others, it has been a while since I posted this link to a study of synthetic Mobil Oil. The meat of the study is the synthetic not only protects for 15,000+ miles, but if you change sooner you may affect engine wear and the oil protection negatively.

18000 Mile Study of Mobil Oil

Follow the links in this article for further interesting oil information. I am convinced that early oil changes waste money and possibly increase wear. Am I gullible, or what?

i had a nercedes did 22000 before oil change no problems
also a vw passat did 17000 and sold it without oil change no problems
The way i look at it is if the manufacturer fits a device to tell me when to change oil then i don't see any reason to change oil earlier

I took my car in this morning. Its 11 months old with 9,500 miles. Its the first oil change. computer says I had another 1,000 or so to go but its going on a boat and wanted to get it done and out of the way.

NOTE: You people in Germany who purchased a BMW and think you get free oil changes!!!! THINK AGAIN. You will pay for it. Its not covered in Germany. The United States, yes. However, they will let you buy your own oil and bring it it. So, 7 quarts of oil at $4.75 a quart is a lot cheaper than the 50 plus Euro's you will pay at the dealer.

Another tip from your Uncle Earl.

My source is a little booklet on BMW technology which came with my wife's 2003 325i in the leather case which includes the owner's manual, service booklet, etc. At the time of its printing the Condition Based Service system was only available on the 7 series. You can probably also find descriptions of it by doing a Google search of CBS, or checking with a dealership salesperson -- they get a detailed guide to the cars which is supposed to make them more knowledgeable when dealing with potential customers.
At first I heard the general rule was no oil change until 15,000 miles.? On the vehicle service status panel, however, I noticed a while ago that it read 11,000.? Now it's down to 9,000 miles.

Is that the car re-evaluating the actual quality of the oil?? Or just evaluating the rpms/throttle position etc. to estimate what the oil quality must be?

At what mileage have other people's E60s recommended an oil change?? It's included in my service, so frankly I want it as soon as possible, so it's fine with me if it's earlier rather than later.

Without making any assignments, this sounds like something Iceman will know exactly.

Hi tab545:

On your question pertaining about our entitled FREE BMW maintenance oil changes at every 15,000 miles by BMW. :'(

I have my own reasons to not wait that long, and I personally change my every in between that high mark of 15,000, and reduce it to 7,500 miles, that I pay for that one myself $69.00 . My belief we have too fine of toys to risk these 15,000 mile oil changes.

Lets pretend that their oil is that good and does last 15,000 miles + without breaking down, but how about our BMW paper oil filters? Do you think they would last 15,000 miles, I do not think so, and that is why I choose to change my engine oil in between that 15,000 mile figure mark set by the oil companies, and make sure to have my E60 oil and filter changed 7,500 miles or better.

Sincerely,

Presley348
As far as the oil filter BMW did have trouble with them when they first started the 15,000 mile oil change, the filter started to disentergrate. They upgraded the filter so that doesn't happen anymore.IMO change every 7,500 miles, its a small investment for car like your driving.

My oil service warning came on today. Mileage was 9500km with 1000km left so 10500 in total (6300 miles).

For whatever reason our oil changes intervals seem to be more frequent than in the USA. Regardless of vehicle type or driving conditions. Same synthetic oil used as well.
