All of your comparision/analysis appears to be relying on the trip computer. It is not very reliable. Last week I ran 1,600 miles, and my trip computer said 29.7 but actual was 28.4.

I didn't go with the four wheel drive because of the reduced mileage. I didn't want to drag that extra weight around all year for the very few miles that it's needed. I've not had any problems with RWD and good snows, here in South Dakota.

Thanks for the good feedback.

Regarding some of the other comments...I don't want a Prius! And 27 MPG is not bad. My 530xit is the same vehicle as the 535xi but with 260 HP instead of 300 HP (but the 535xi has direct injection which is in theory more efficient). When I drive around town I would love to get on the turbos...and I wouldn't care about the mileage. On the other hand, I twice a year I do a round trip between Seattle and Phoenix. I've done about 7 of these trips in my 530xit and the computer always shows an average between 27-28 mpg. If I extrapolate my test comparison between my 530xit and the 535xi to my Phoenix Seattle round trip, the 535xi would average 22-23 mpg. In reality its a matter of how you feel about a car...you want the power, but you also want it to be efficient...is that too much to ask for a $65000 car?
There usually is an inverse relationship between power and mpg regardless of the price of the car. You want to get 27-28 mpg stick with the 530, you want more power like the 535 you will get less mpg. Yup it probably is too much to ask for in a 65K car, or an 85K car or a 40K car or a 20K car or any car. Power tends to use gas.

My milage is 13.7L/100km - 17.16US MPG. Thats driving the car 60% hard. At one point (before the dealer reset my computer) it was 12.9L/100km - 18.23US MPG. I'm not complaining one bit. Yes, the car drinks more than she should, but I love the power and satisfaction of "booting it". 22MPG is a very good average, and I think getting anything below that in a 300hp 4,000lbs car is asking for too much. Just my opinion.

If you are focused on your difference between 27 and 31 mpg you are talking about approximately $97.00 more per year in gas. That is based upon 10,000 miles/yr with $2/gal gas. You can adjust each factor to more accurately reflect your situation. This number is negligable to me in evaluating whether to purchase a new car. Good luck.

on my 2 previous cars, the trip conputer was optimistic by 10% - these are factory settings...

I am also one who pays a lot of attention to consumption. In your arithmetic, did you consider that the diesel takes longer to warm up than the petrol engine. because as it warms up, the consumption improves...

I seriously doubt it would be that big of a difference. On steady state cruise, I get 27 mpg with the 550i, the best mileage of any car I've owned in 20 years. But my normal highway mileage is 25 or so. A 535xi should get similar (+ for the 3.0TT, - for the AWD).
I get 18ish around town, 16 when running hard, and 9-10 on track.

I would extrapolate at a 10-15% difference, not a straight 4mpg. That yields 25 mpg, similar to the 550i.

Are you calculating based on actual gas used and mileage or relying on the on-board computer? The E60 on-board computer is conservative and not accurate. The twin turbos can eat alot more gas than the NA engine if you don't mind the RPMs too.

Ok, here's my $0.02:

1.) A car that has only 100 mls, needs to be broken in. I'm pretty sure that the milage will improve after the car has driven a couple of 1,000 mls extra (at least, that's my experience after approx. 40 new cars)

2.) Buy the RWD version, unless you really, really need the AWD. You'll get more driving fun, lower weight, better milage, and you can opt for the sports suspension.

My former vehicle was a '04 Yukon Denali. That thing got 17mpg on the highway, downhill, with a tail wind, and with the cruise on. Therefore, the E60 to me is like an economy car. It's all relative.

BTW, on a trip home from the outerbanks of NC back to southern NJ, my 535XI got 29.4 mpg according to the computer and that was with a lot of stop and go traffic in Virginia.
