Hi.. I am at some trouble and need advise !!! I purchased a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 from TireRack... also a set of Replica style 166 17" at a local store. When everything installed together on my 2007 525i non-sport, the car just shaking I've been back to the tire shop 3 times and still not fix yet They perfromed wheel balance twice, replaced those easy broken Hub Centric Ring twice (74 - 72.56) and swap back and forth a few times.... Now they told me to install back my style138s and 4 season, they will send my michelin to a outside store to have a Dynamic Balance (something they say will perform a more detaill balance check on tire as well as wheels)... did anybody heard about this... what's the difference compare to regular tire store balance spin m/c ??

Also, when I put the Replica wheel on the floor, I put the Hub Centric Ring inside the hub and I can still feel there is some clearance ply... something like 0.2 or .3 mm space.. I am worry I got a lemon wheel set... or those Michelin tire is just not round... new defect ?

I have been tighten those wheel myself with torque wrench, also tighten wheels on the jack before touch the floor....etc.

Anybody can give me some idea will be great !!!!

By the way,, those PA3 drove way better than those RSAs when they work.... trouble is I lost the smooooth around 80km or up.... any got crazy at 100-120km... The steering wheel, chair and floor all shaking.....

Replicas are trouble esp if you have to use rings. For your sake I hope it's the tires but I have a feeling it's the wheels.

Sorry to hear stockwell993,

But I must say I'm not surprised at all.

Wheels with Hub Centric Rings should never be used on any car.

On top of that BMW's are very absolute about the wheel balance.

You need new OEM or other high quality wheels design for the E60.

Guys -

I'm glad we're all here discussing this - I've got a similar issue with my new TOYO T1-R's!!! I put stock M5 rims on (M166 - fresh off of a new M5 - NOT REPLICAS) and am now on my THIRD set of TOYO T1-R's from Les Schwab.

RESULT - MY CAR SHAKES!!!! AT 42mph and 75mph. its a fine vibration at first but becomes quite pronounced at those speeds. My gas pedal and steering wheel (including my body and clothing) all shaking -which becomes quite annoying!!

Les Schwab first claimed that their balancing machine was 'off' so they rebalanced them.... now they've been balanced TWICE and i finally paid BMW to do the "ROAD-FORCE' balancing.

STILL SHAKES!! Does anyone else have Toyo T1-R's?!? Please tell me that i'm not crazy. I admit, I'm a perfectionist - but all of my friends have commented on it as well and it's RUINED my fine ride!!

ANY COMMENTS?! PLEASE!!

Thanks gents.

I've never heard that before. Are all of those aftermarket wheel makers like BBS, ASA going to go out of business? It would be way too expensive to manufacture every wheel to a vehicle-specific centerbore.

I had BMW balance my wheels 8 times and align my car 5 times before they finally got it right, only after they got their best mechanic on the job. I had terrible vibration in the steering wheel, etc. with my OEM's and replicas for months, and now the replicas are balanced perfectly and shimmy is gone. My replicas didn't require hub rings (are BMW spec). I won't know about the OEM's till I install them in a few weeks. I am not quite sure what the last mechanic did, but I stood there beside him the entire time and SAW with my own eyes that the job was done right and that everything was zero'd in.

As for out-of-round tires, I actually have 2 of them in the front...eggs on the replicas. But even still, my vibration has gone away since the last alignment and balance (the front RE050A's failed the Hunter road force balance initially) so they just re-balanced them on traditional machine afterwards. It turns out the eggs didn't even matter. I have a feeling it was more in the alignment since the other 4 alignments were performed by a different, less experienced tech. This guy even inspected my struts and springs, disconnected the strut tower bolts and repositioned everything. He was the BOMB! He weighed down the car with sand bags, etc. and got everything perfectly in spec. I have had zero problems since...knock on wood.

So, in my experience, it HAS to be the balance and/or alignment and/or tires. Everything you will read about this usually says BALANCE. Good luck with yours!

Hi All, actually I was having some issue with my car when I took delivery. The car has been sitting at the dealer lot for 3-4 months... I believe those tire developed flat spot, I can feel the shake when speed upto 110km,,, end up dealer had to replace all 4 tire for me after my presistence ascalation. The BMW Services Mgr told me I can feel those because of the All Aluminum Chassis... If those suspension component is made of iron/steel... no issue ?

Anyway,, sounds I am not alone on this subject,, will continue my journey on those Hub-Ring, balance, tire ...etc This is going to kill my fun on drive a BMW and I know $$ can fix this... but not all of us got unlimited bank account.
