Hi guys I have a 2008 535d and when I was changing the crankcase breather I've dropped a torx bit down the breather hole, yes i know what a dick, i heard it fall quite a long way down.
Tryed a magnet but its a bit tight the first bit, to remove the camshaft covers the breather housing do i have to remove the injectors and glow plugs first..?
Any other ideas how i can get this back would be great

I have done similar things and I have moved heaven and earth to avoid pulling the motor to bits.
Assuming you cannot get a small usb camera down there I would still bob a magnet in and out a few hundred times.
I had to make one up once by using a neodymium magnet (about 3mm wide by 6mm long). I heat shrunk it onto a flexible cable like a bicycle brake cable (heat shrink tubing over the end of the magnet to stop it detaching). This way I could bend it a bit at the end to try all sorts of positions.
Good luck - I would hate to be doing this - esp. in the Northern hemisphere right now.

I'm not familiar with the diesel, but if the breather is located in front, over the timing chain, then it's at the bottom. If it's in the rocker area, then it's still there. There isn't any large holes that would be big enough for a bit to fall thru. If it fell in the chain vinicity hopefully, it fell to the bottom. The chances of the pump sucking it up are slim to none. You may be able to remove the oil sensor to get a camera in there, and try using a flexible magnet.
