to be fair, as much as i adore BMW and the mighty 7. i have to say the new S is on a league of its own. Very very well done.
If my richie rich (daddy/cousin/neighbour/uncle/lottery winner joe age 60+) is going to buy his grocery getter, for sure it is going to be a merc, specifically the S.
this specific market for the S will not consider a bimmer.

all fairness, Dr. Panke agreed that we operate in the same market segment each with its unique offerings. in the end its the consumer who has the gain in variety of whats being offered.
its all good.

my vote is on the 7.....
S550 is like a Chrysler. That look won't catch on. It's lost its' European look. As for technology, it is way superior than BMWs. I know that's hard to swallow, but it's true.

Saw the new Mercedes S550 today at my local grocery store. I couldn't believe what a BMW ripoff it was. I peeked inside to see the I-Drive like controller, then I noticed the Bangel butt like rear. It has a raised trunk lid just like a 7 series. Have Mercedes and Lexus no shame. I wouldn't buy one of these just based on their copy-cat ways alone.

I disagree with you about the rip off as I think the 7 series is hideous. The new S Class looks very maybach like in the rear.

I absolutely LOVE the new S550 and am planning to buy one as soon as I hit my 80h birthday. Hopefully by then the will add the catheter bag option along with all those other cool things they always seem to have. Until then, I think I'll stick with what I have.

Here in Las Vegas, Limos, Maybachs and exotics rule the strip. I know if you pull up in a 750li vs S550 in valet parking the S550 gets more looks since it does look like a baby Maybach. Ive actually seen S550 get front valet space parking over the 750li which does say alot.

I have seen that too. A real ripoff as you said. One thing I don't think they have rip offed is the driving experience. The 7-serie is much more fun drive.
But is 7-series as comfortable and quiet as the new S-class and new LS? If you want a fun to drive car, you shouldn't consider 7-series in the first place. S-class is outselling 7-series and I expect the new LS would too.

I just don't like the way that it looks, especially the front grill. The cnet reviewer insists on putting down iDrive and is obviously biased against BMW. His quote- "the main difference between this and iDrive, is that this works well." He lost his credibility with me after making that comment. My iDrive works very well, and it took me a short time to figure it out. I wonder what he drives when he goes home at night?
