My ten penneth is that it's an electrical problem - faulty fuel or air sensor?
Had something similar on my wife's E46 last year - turned out to be the ignition coils which were faulty. (BMW assist recognised the symptoms straight away and sent a man out to replace them under warranty - I was a bit annoyed that this was a "known problem" and they hadn't changed them as a matter of course when the car was in for a service a couple of months earlier).
Let's hope the dealer can diagnose your fault and fix it as quickly.
Keep us posted on what the problem turns out to be.

sounds like fuel or clogged injector.
do you always fill up premium/high octane fuel?
are you aware at any point sub standard fuel or additives have been added/used on your vehicle?
have you a habit of constantly running the car with less than quarter tank full.
these are common driver mistakes which led to the problems described.
the next obvious step is to bring the car into the dealer, it migth be the coils or sensors among others. or perhaps even loose/leaky spark plugs.
best of luck.
