Fellas,

Im experiencing this weird helicopter/chopper sound from the manual trans after it is throughougly warmed up. If I depress the clutch, its gone. But if i just sit and let it idle w/o doing anything, its noisy. I feel no drivability issues. SOme say its the flywheel disc or something like that.... Any help is appreciated.

im not a pro but it looks like a broken bearing or damaged flywheel you have to check with your work shop

My first guess would be broken bearing - try to press the clutch 1/2 way and get to 2000 RPMs - do you feel vibration on the pedal?

How many miles do you have on the car?

If you don?t feel any vibrations, that would indicate something else than the bearing. But maybe I am wrong.
It is very rare that the flywheel would go bad? It is a solid piece of metal. Maybe just some of the mounting bolts are lose.
Did you have any type of work done on your clutch and\or transmission? Did you check the fluid level in the transmission?

Wow, 38000 miles and already problems with the clutch? That is really strange. My 545i has 99000 miles and original clutch is still OK.

Sounds like a front main shaft bearing. Does it get better as you go up thru gears?

Throw out bearing generally would change tone as you press the clutch pedal

those are the exact symptoms. there's no sound while in any gears or the clutch is pressed in.
