Sounds like the speed sensor on one of the wheels went bad. It's quite common in most new cars (not just BMW). And the only risk is loss of DSC or ABS (if it's only the speed sensor). Other than that there is little or no risk and it would be like driving a car from the 1980's (pre ABS).

Mu 550 is at the dealers now. They are having difficulty finding the needed sensor. Apparently, there are 800+ on backorder. Obviously a problem with the part and lots of failures. I drove mine for a few weeks before taking it to the dealer with no problems. It is no different than driving an older car without all the safety features.
Dealer has me in a new X3.

I had that happen in my MINI... front right wheel speed sensor line got cut and ABS, DSC, and FTM lights all light up like a christmas tree. Its driveable... you just lose those functions. as someone said... pre 1990s there were none of those stuff anyways and A TON of cars on the road dont have ABS still not to mention DSC.
Depends on how you are as a driver... do you rely on ABS and DSC to save your buttocks? If you cant / dont know how to drive a car w/out those things then correct its not safe to drive the car.
