I don't need a second remote, I just need a way to unlock the car in case I get locked out.
Thanks!
In most cases, BMW key fobs require programming and coding to work with a specific vehicle, so it is generally true that you need to go to a BMW dealership to get a duplicate key fob. However, it's possible that some independent automotive locksmiths or key fob specialists may also be able to program a new key fob for you. Regarding duplicating the metal key, it's worth noting that some BMW models use a laser-cut key, which can be more difficult to duplicate than a traditional key. It's possible that your local locksmith is unable to duplicate the key because it is laser-cut. If you just need a spare key to unlock your car in case of emergency, you could consider getting a traditional, non-electronic key cut. This would allow you to unlock your car manually, but would not allow you to start the engine or use any of the remote functions of the key fob. A BMW dealership or a locksmith may be able to cut a traditional key for you. Keep in mind that if you do lose your only key fob, it can be a more complicated and expensive process to get a new one programmed, so it may be worth considering getting a spare key fob for peace of mind.
