I took my car to the stealer today to have the latest recall (battery terminal lug and grease) done. My car is a 2007 550i with 52K mi. This is what the stealer said my car needed/recommended, at the time he was writing the work order, now that my car is 5 years old:

1. Change all cooling hoses at a cost of $1900.

2. Flush P/S system every 2 years at a cost of $275

3. Clean injectors every year at a cost of $200.

4. A complete scan at a cost of $180.

Is this BS or what? I have never heard of changing all the hoses on a vehicle b/c it's 5 years old. How often should the hoses be changed?

I think the stealer was trying to give me a real hose job! :-(

LOL...so typical of dealerships. I had mine in for a complete sunroof replacement under warranty when the SA told me I needed new rear tires because they were getting "near" the tread wear indicators. To me, that just means they're half done and in need of a track day They quoted me a price roughly twice what tirerack.com would have cost. The dealer makes most of their money in their service department, not from selling cars.

BMWs have notoriously bad cooling systems. The BMW CCA Tech Advisor actually advocates changing hoses and other cooling system components as a preventative measure. The price they have quoted is ludicrous. You should be able to feel the hoses and check for any soft spots. I'd change the coolant to be sure, but I'd leave the hoses alone.

Changing the power steering fluid is a good idea, but you can do it yourself in 30 minutes and by buying the Pentosin CH11S power steering fluid for about $20.

How do they intend to "clean" the fuel injectors? Are they going to remove the injectors and put them in an ultrasonic cleaning machine, or just chemically treat them? A couple of treatments if Techron will work fine.

The "complete scan" is undoubtedly being suggested to find error codes that lead to more work. You can do the same thing with INPA (see www.bmwcoding.com for details).

And a friend of mine the SM will tell you the EXACT same thing. They're just selling an image, that's all. I laugh everytime I'm in there and I see all these clothes, hats, pens, valve stem caps, license plate covers, pads of paper and all this B$

When mine was in for the battery cable, they recommended the fuel injector service for $185 based on mileage (my 2004 is also at 52K miles). I declined. I've never heard any mention on this board or anywhere else for the other items you indicated. The only two-year flush I'm aware of is brake fluid. These all sound like profit making activities rather than true service needs.

Yup, I think the stealer's are looking for suckers. I almost spit-out my coffee when the SA said $1900 for a complete hose job. ;-)

Your dealer's recommended 5 year service is that the bolts holding on the front license plate be removed and everything behind them replaced with new original equipment parts.
