hi guys

just asking a little advise from all the experts out there, i have poor MPG and just been reading up on the internet about cleaning the MAF and bought some spray solution to do it. Loads of ppl swear that cleaning it improves MPG, but where on a 525D (2005) is it located in the engine bay?

AND once removed and reconnected will this make the engine management light come on?

AND has any one done this before on their E60? and where where the results?

thanks in advance
So, what do you consider a poor MPG? My 525D manual does about 9,2 km/100L average/mixed (about 31 MPG UK and 26 MPG US). I consider this poor considering the mixed/average should be 7.0 according BMW. Now I know these figures are optimistic but I expected at least 7.5

I was told by BMW that in winter my 9,2 consumption isn't to bad (car uses extra fuel for aux. heater).

hi mike, in a previous post P. Mark answered the question for me but i would also like to ask you about your opinion on this topic.

when the MAF is taken of and cleaned will the engine management light come on, ie will have to get it reset by a machine/diagnostic tool?

P Mark has also suggested that i unplug the MAF and drive the car, and see/observe the difference and if the car give more MPG and drives better then the MAF needs cleaning or replacing. Surely this will make the engine management light come on, right. but when plugged back in will it auto turn of?

My dealer has said if removed and then cleaned with out the car switched on then the light shouldn't come on at all, but he says "YOU DON'T NEED TO CLEAN IT"

Mike what do you think?

I personally would not drive without my MAF in unless it was an emergency. As far as cleaning, I've done it without any ill effects but remember it's a very delicate sensor so be very careful handling it.

If you do decide to drive w/o the MAF and the CEL comes on, I don't know if it'll turn off w/o a dealer visit.

Hi Michael,

Did the cleaning bring you any good?

Cris.
