Yes, a 4.4 works very well in the 5000 lb X5. I had one. Lots of power.
We have an '06 530xi now (N52B30) - Plenty of power and I've had no problems but I worry about it's aluminum cylinder walls (coated with a thin, hard coating). Those cylinders can *not* be machined as can the steel-lined walls in the M54.
I would like to have had the M54 for the E60 AWD, which is about 3600 lbs. 3.0 is the way to go with either the M54 or N52, in my opinion.
My 325xi also has an M54, which I love and adore, but it's not going to win any races.
Durability: My M54 in the 325 has 150,000 miles and still runs like a top. I met a guy with one who had 253,000 miles and he still sung praises.

The M54B25 (2.5 liter) has something like 185 hp. The M54B30 has 225 hp,a 40 hp difference.
There's a "ZHP" option on the 3.0 that makes 235 hp. I don't know if that option was available on the E60.
I have the 2.5 in my E46 325xi. I'm happy with it but more power would add some thrill to it.

If you're still talking about the 2004-2005, with the M54, then yes, the power difference is substantial. Especially, on a heavier car like the E60.

. 530i is definitely the way to go. Good luck
There was a clean 525i sport package with a price that i just couldn't give up! I just bought it this morning. 125,000 miles. The body, suspension is perfect! The motor, transmission, breaks are great! Seems like it just needs a tune up, all new fluid and new tranny fluid, filter, etc. I'm in love with it! I noticed that there's an AUX unit installed. Don't know if it's optional or if it's custom. Didn't see if it works yet.
