The difference between a 520d and and a 530d is like the difference between a 1.8 petrol and a 3 litre petrol, I kid you not.
Seriously consider the petrols unless you doing big mileage, even the big engines turn reasonable fuel economy if you drive them gently, the dervs only have really good economy when your on a run, typically around town for example you can go into the mid 20's quite depressingly.

Absolutely mate, test drive as many as possible, make sure you take petrol and derv to retain perspective bud
M-Sport package is highly desirable as is the Media Pack and either business Nav, or Pro Nav, plus the usual extras, go manual with the smaller engines and auto with the larger ones (IMHO)
For my money it would be either
530i Manual (if you can find one cheap its worth a pop)
540i Auto/Manual (not sure if they do a manual option but hey )
545i Auto
550i Auto
525d Manual (if you can find one cheap its worth a pop)
530d Auto/Manual (I have the auto steptronic, nice and works well with this engine but I would consider a manual with this engine as well maybe)
535d Auto
Just thinking aloud here based on what I read, and what I drove, no way am I to be considered correct in any particular opinion

For me deffo 530d or higher. When I was remapping I did a 520d upto around 200bhp it made a big difference but my E39 530d was still quicker even before i mapped it.
520d is a very good car but just a wee bit under powered. the E60 is big car to push down the road

If you're worried about economy then get the 520D. If you want a big grin and performance get the 530D.
As has been said before, if you do a lot of town driving consider a petrol. Diesels really don't like town work.
