Clearly, the fun factor on the M5 engine begins after 5,500 rpms. Up to 4,500 rpm, however, the 550 delivers slightly more power.

As you can see, these are two very different engines. The 550 has more than enough juice to keep me happy, however, I would love to put the throttle down on an M5

i didn't say they were equal, i said the m5 didn't blow me away like i was expecting it to. i had thought it was gonna be a bigger difference than what it turned out to be.

also, being fast can be completely differnent to feeling fast -
- some lexus' are fast. but they have the most comfy seats and softest rides, so they sure don't feel fast. in fact, they feel boring.
- m6 is only a little tiny bit faster than m5, but m6 feels a lot faster than m5 because you sit lower to the ground. same with 545 vs 645 or 550 vs 650.
- we've all seen those m5 vs gallardo videos on m5board and they seem to be pretty even. but i bet the g feels so much faster than m5 because you sit lower, smaller car, less weight, harder ride, louder engine, etc.
- convertibles feels faster than coupes, because you have the wind in your face.
- etc.
I can agree with that.

The other point is that cars always feel quicker from the passenger seat. I know when i've had passengers in my car they swear it's quicker than any other car they've been in or driven (perception of course).

I'm totally used to the speed in my car & that's with the extra 40BHP & 60nm torque. I know quicker cars exist but when stacked up about the M5 package as a whole, their is little if anything that comes close.

Good graph.

Also add in the different gearing (often auto vs SMG) the throttle response which is lightning fast in P500S & even with on par power at lower RPM's the M5 will still be pulling away.

The age old debate is how quick is quick. If the M5 is say 3/4 second quicker to 60 than a 550 & an extra few 10th's against the 545, in the real world the difference willl not be huge. On a drag from 0-150 the gap would be fairly large but when does that happen on the road??

The M5 is an overall package that takes on some styling cues, handling, chassis, engine, gearbox, more power & toys as well as image i suppose. I for one don't think it was designed to just be the fastest E60 in the range, it was designed to be driven differently than the 550 etc.

All very good and interesting comments. I just went through the same decision making prosess and ended up with a loaded 2004 545 with a huge dollar savings.

What drove me to make the desision other than $$ was that I could not feel much of a difference between the two cars in what I would consider my everyday type of driving. Driving over 120mph or even 110mph was just not something I do to often. However, I do like to accelerate as fast as I can from stopped or rolling slow to 60 or 80 all the time and I was not able to notice a big difference between the M5 and 545.

The 545 or 550 are an amazing cars. No regrets whats so ever, but for the type of driving I do, the 2004 E55 AMG was like a rocket ship from 0 to 80. If it wasn't for the looks and much more sporty feel, I would have gone with the E55 for the type of driving I like and is possible in California. Driving over 120 with all the traffic here is close to impossible.
