Bringing this thread back up from the grave -
I've gotten this warning a few times on very cold (~35*) mornings, and figured it was simply "shrinkage" in the coolant fluid, and the level was just above mininum. No big deal.
Then I saw the threads about level sticks breaking off, and reservoirs needing replacement, mainly on 545i's.
Is there any history of similar stick/reservoir issues on the 535i's?

just check your expansion tank to see if it's missing part of the plastic stick. One would not need to replace his expansion tank just because of this anyway. After reading the very first post I would assume it's the battery which can play dirty tricks on people due to voltage inconsistencies.
