Its suppose to be acccurate to about 25 feet... and you only need to update the database if you have new roads or if you want new POI's Points of Interests... Like restruants... Gas stations... Hospitals... and of course Golf Courses...?

Hahahha Layer 3 huh... Guess you're a network guy huh... 7 layers of the OSI model...?

[quote name='stream' date='Oct 26 2005, 08:27 PM']And one other benefit that others haven't mentioned, us that in the US, voice command comes with nav.? Voice command combined with iDrive is great.

I wouldn"t be without it.? It's very accurate everywhere I've been in the northeast.? Also, I have a early-2004 disc and I find no need to update.

One last thing - adding HUD brings nav to a whole different level.

I agree.Nav is a must and with HUD it makes it that much better.
cheers

(Not US, but opinion should be valid globally...)

I absolutely *love* it!
Did a 16 hour trip yesterday from Paris to south Sweden, and I found myself falling for the urge to cut into country side roads just when I felt for it, because that particular road looked "interesting" or simply because I couldn't take another hour of Autobahn !
I would *never* have done that with no nav inte the car and never once did it let me down on those 1300 kilometers!

BUT - as others have said - go for the Pro version, with bigger screen and maps. That allows you to explore and take you whereever the road goes, without you loosing touch of where you are .

I have it and absolutely love it. It is so accurate that you will never even miss a rotary exit. Remember the old days? You always need go to Yahoo (or Google) to print out directions if you need to go somewhere you are not familiar with. You don't have to anymore.

Hi,

I would love to get user opinions on the NAV system for US based cars. How accurate is the system in major metro areas such as Philadelphia. How useful is the screen for showing maps, etc...

Thanks in advance!

I am part of the camp that says it's not that necessary - provided you don't drive to a lot of unknown areas/spots. I don't mind Googling the directions from time to time before I leave. Also, it's possible to do this on the go with your mobile via WAP or SMS. Imagine the day when we can use the car's bluetooth integration with the phone to SMS the request for directions to Google SMS and get the directions back on the iDrive display?

In the US, if you're ever -really- screwed you can just dial BMW Assist and pay them $5 to direct you to where you need to go.

I like the speed of the interface that the non-Nav iDrive has. I do wish I had enhanced voice control though.

My wife is very challenged when it comes to finding places and she has come to rely on her NAV.

I like it too as it has never let me down anywhere.

BMWs NAV clearly needs some work compared to the competition (Japanese) but it works pretty well and is worth the price of admission.

Are you saying that Idrive is slow to operate with the nav?

do others with Nav have a sluggish Idrive? I've also heard it might be slow to initialize after you've started the car -

Well, "slow" is a relative term. Could it be faster? Absolutely...but it is faster than it used to be so it is a good thing.

Yes, boot-up of the s/w can take several seconds...not too bad, really.

There have been threads that discuss the relative speed of the interface - nav vs. non-nav.
