ONLY YOU CAN DECIDE WHICH CAR _YOU_ PREFER. HAVING REVIEWED ALL THREE CARS SEVERAL TIMES, I AM ON MY THIRD E60. WHEN IT'S TIME TO CHANGE AGAIN, I WILL REVIEW THE COMPETITION ALONGSIDE WHAT BMW HAS TO OFFER. FOR ME, AT THE MOMENT, THERE IS NO BETTER CAR IN THIS CLASS THAN THE E60. IF I THOUGHT OTHERWISE, I WOULD BE IN AN E OR A6. AS FOR ASKING PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD, WELL, WE'RE ALL HERE BECAUSE WE CHOSE THE E60 ABOVE THE AUDI OR MERC, SO ANY ANSWER YOU GET WILL BE BIASED. GO TRY THE OTHERS AND GET WHAT YOU FEEL IS RIGHT FOR YOUR DRIVING STYLE, IMAGE, AND REQUIREMENTS!

I can see the appeal of an AMG 63 or RS6, which are great and pretty exclusive automobiles, but going for a normal E-class or A6... I went through the motions of looking at alternatives to the 5er when recently ordering my new car. I know the Benz is comfortable to drive and A6 has excellent build quality, and both are pretty much as quick with the equivalent engines to the relevant 5er. BUT for me they simply don't give the same rewarding feel behind the wheel and have that "sensible choice" feel about them (-- and that also applies to the engine sizes I drive!).
I would certainly go for another 5er, in your case the 550i Sport -- awesome car
So what kind of car are you after -- not happy with your 5er or just looking for a change?

I test drove the E550 and the A6 4.2 (among others) when my Lexus lease was expiring. The E550 was pretty quick - might have been a tick quicker than the 550i but there was no comparison in the twisties. With the "sport package" it floated in the turns even in the stiffest setting. The E-class also has a ton of buttons and I found their system to be rather complicated compared tot he I-Drive. There was no comparison in the seats - BMW had them beat in comfort and support. The Active Steering and suspension in the BMW sport really left the MB rather far behind. In addition, at the time, BMW was offering some lease deals on the 550i (prior to the LCI launch). The MB lease program was ugly with no deals and high rates. They were basically saying it's a Mercedes and that will sell itself. The A6 is a nice car but was not nearly as quick as either the BMW or MB. I didn't need the AWD and had a rather ugly experience with a previously owned A6 4.2 with a myriad of quality and service issues.
Obviously I chose the BMW 550i sport over those two. Other cars I tried were the Jaguar R and the Caddy STS - V.

What about the Audi S6? I didn't seriously condisder it when I bought my 550 because I wanted a manual. But if that's not the case for you, the S6 is a couple of grand more expensive than a well optioned 550 but it comes with that V10! I always thought it would be an interesting choice if I wanted an auto transmission.

Well, here are my 2 cents .....I always notice Audi drivers saying their cars are "Just as good as a BMW", if so why not get the real thing?? I also get tired of the Audi habit of challenging any BMW they see around here, kind of like a small chip is on their shoulder or something. Besides which, I'm a BMW guy, so I suppose that predisposes me to the E60 suggestion too. I just think its a better drivers car! So for what its worth, there it is.
