So does the Logic 7 act as a regular stereo when "Theater" or "Concert Hall" aren't selected? "Signal processing" that superimposes effects is a big violation of my audio ethic. In fact, processors in general are, unless I'm watching movies at someone else's house.

I'd hate to think the standard BMW audio rig is just the Logic 7 minus L7 settings I'll never use. Is there more to it for that extra $1.2k?
Hardware requirements for good sound consist of good amp, source, and speakers. What kind of speakers are in the BMWs? As for DSP (digital signal processing), L7 does a fairly good job in the car, but not for the price.

BMW amp: weak
BMW source: noisy
BMW speakers: cheap and sounds muddy
DSP: good integration. Hands-down
BMW CD changer: lame - no MP3 capability and super over priced.
All and all, $1800 is quite too much money for what it delivered.

Remember, CD changer supposed to be standard nowadays for luxury cars. Not an option.

I obtained what I consider to be very good MP3's by ripping using iTunes/AIFF and then converting the AIFF files to MP3's at 192 kbps.

This is also a misconception.

iTunes is, quite possibly, the WORST media player ever. The audio encoding is horrendous.

If you want good MP3 files... use Exact Audio Copy.

I am not into it that far--being concerned about what the best ripping program is. But, as I said, I have produced some excellent MP3's using the technique that I mentioned. And, as I said, "go figure." And, what misconception are you talking about? I didn't make any claims about ripping programs except for what I said above.

Did you see my settings post? Just turn all the junk off, and make it sould like you want. It's just a set of speakers, an amp, a CD player, an equalizer, etc.

The best player was the Rio Karma. Unfortunately, they are no longer making them.

You got me thinking about MP3 player rankings. I am still searching just out of curiosity. Two rankings are available here--one based on mumber of awards and one based on popularity. I'm trying to find some more substantive rankings.

Here's a ranking based on market share--essentially a popularity ranking too.

Here is PC Worlds ranking based on both lab tests and its editors preferences. Ipod on top for large capacity players. Ipod second for smaller capacity players.

Same ole same ole here--Consumer Search. Consumer search rates reviews of devices among other things. It thinks that he top reviews of MP3 players are these: Best MP3 Players Reviews: (out of 23) CNet.com, PC Magazine, PC World. Here is a link to links to these reviews. Ipod does well against the field in all 3, but is not always on top--but always is second at worst. Many other reviews also are linked in the last link.

I think you're posting unsubstantiated conjecture. Do you have anything to support this? My personal experience of iTunes is that it has perfectly acceptable audio encoding. My experience is also that for most tracks, most of the time, AAC is a more capable codec than MP3. As the original poster was also using an iPod as the audio source then other formats such as Apple Lossless, AIFF or WAV might also provide audio quality enhancements.

L7 is way WAY better than the standard. I hoped for a little bit more tho...
they could use bigger subwoofers under the seats..for example

the 1200$ upgrade is not that much for it considering i had to pay over 2000$ for an alpine aftermarket system for a 'decent' sound (on another car). and.. with 60-80 db background noise even the best hifi system is useless.
