Just wanted to share this:

The dial switch for the headlights can be pushed in.
Just push it in, it still works as usual. You can use it while pushed in, or you can pull it out again. Doesn't matter.
Don't ask why, I don't know. Just a little gimmick.

 

It could be because of a rear foglight. Usually only on Euro models.

 

The fog lights (both - front and rear) are turned on with a little button. One is on the top left, the other one on the top right ( where the HUD button is on US spec cars). The HUD button on Ger spec cars is on the bottom right, under the rear fogs...

 

I was thinking that as I was typing it.

 

Its for knee saftey in the event of an accident....stops you getting a smashed patella.

I leave it pushed in, since I have it on Auto all the time.

 

Personally I think the twin airbags on your avatar would work better....

 

DD is right. The retractible switch is for increased safety on impact.

Be careful about pushing it in. I've read posts where people pushed it in and it it wouldn't come back out and the dealer needed to replace it.

 

Side question: What happens exactly when the car if shut off and left, with the switch in the Auto position? Thanks much.

Nothing untoward happens, if the lights were on, opening the drivers door (to get out) switches them off.

I leave the switch on auto all the time, when I start the car in my garage, its dim enough for the lights to switch on, after driving out, they go off.
