I'd much druther have another cup holder. OTOH, it does make a good anchor for a DC power outlet if you need one. That accessory lists for about 8 USD. The "torch" is on the right of the left most hinge of the glove box. I rarely use. LED hand light is better.

sorry got no pics handy

if you open the glovebox (in a uk car at least) on the right hand side of the glovebox you will notice what appears to be a two pin plug type socket. It will be located to the right of the cd changer if there's on fitted. that is the cradle for the torch to sit.

It's definately not available on German spec E60's!
Mine doesn't have it and I haven't seen any other German E60 having it...
Another poor job by BMW...

Are you sure? It's sitting pretty far back but it seems to me like every 5 has to have one. (We are talking about the socket right?)

If you can't get the torch I'll be happy to get one for you overhere though..

You are right about the location. You will never find it if you have a crick in your neck. Now you might have a crick after eyeballing it. Here is a picture of the socket only.

I have something what looks like a socket on the left side of the glove compartment, but there is a plastic cover over it.
I don't know if there is a socket underneath and doubt it is...

That's probably it. Remove the plastic cover and the pins / socket should be there. On UK cars, the torch is on the right side of the glovebox as we're right hand drive. So I guess for LHD cars it will be on the left as in the photos here.
