Correct--the pre-MY06 E60 iDrive controllers are plastic, coated in ruthenium. The '06 M5 has a machined aluminum controller--here's pic, and it looks great and has a nice feel, as I can confirm from my test drive:

Yes only the top is covered, and I think it is always black so no auburn, beige etc, then why?

My dealer couldn't get me the leather controller. Turns out they have all been pulled. The grease and oils from peoples hands have been discoloring the leather and causing it to peel. He said if you have one of these and need it replaced you will have to go to the original controller.

funny is that when I ordered my spoilers and pedals I asked them if they have any? They said no, not their profile.... then I said I do not want ACS (no offense to any who like it) ... so there is mine
It is bigger real ALU but do not know if it is on top of it- I guess so, as by the delivery it was like that, my dealer get my stuff installed and they did not say it came in, so that was nice surprise.extra is that I can spin it hard to all directons, that is shuffle in CD mode.
