I wonder who first interpreted the documentation locating the USB port in the rear console?
there are 2 possibilities... either BMW marketing 'mis-interpreted/communicated' the spec (likely) or... in the interim, BMW designers changed their minds about where it would be located (unlikely)

BMW UK actually said "adjacent to AUX-IN (rear of centre console)" ...

Well 50% of that statement is unambiguous and turns out to be accurate.

Which 50%?
IMHO that is open to (too wide an) interpretation.
Oh, and wherever they "meant", it's not there.
That's the 50%.

I don't know if this has been answered already but the top headphone socket is only designed for headphones and the difference can clearly be heard between that and using a lower dock cable (belkin etc)
So with this design if no cables are supplied then you use a standard ipod cable for the usb control you are forced to use the headphone socket for sound instead of the better quality line out.
What we need is a ipod cable with a usb and branched off line out, anyone know if such a thing exists? It could be done using a standard ipod dock as they have a lineout at the back.

Is it not the case that you plug a 'normal' Ipod cable (the same one that use to connect the Ipod to your computer) in the USB socket and then Idrive controls the playlists etc. I am not the most technical of people but it should really be that simple, should it not?

The picture of the cable linked to above shows how it will work, you plug both sockets into the car then the ipod onto the connector and then full control is granted in idrive.
