CO2/MPG figures are now available on vcacarfueldata for all the variants of the revised 520d.

US viewers please switch off now, something to do with 'saving the planet'...

520d saloon manual 136g/km 55.4mpg
520d saloon auto 149g/km 50.4mpg

520d touring manual 140g/km 53.3mpg
520d touring auto 154g/km 48.7mpg

Also, site shows slightly revised cold start fuel economy for 535d from September production.
I guess this might be just a modified test result or more unlikely software update, rather than hardware change.

This article indicates 140/g for the new 520d manual, can't reallt see a difference between saloon and touring but 140 or 136 is the same bracket for company car tax so no big issue either way!

The BMW 5 Series: greater variety, increased economy:

In the new BMW 5 Series, there are six petrol and four diesel engines to choose from in the model year 2008. More than ever before, the Sedan and Touring realise their aspiration to set benchmarks both in driving performance and economy. The two new entry level versions of the BMW 5 Series - the BMW 520d and the BMW 520i - show just what the development strategy of efficient dynamics is capable of achieving in this vehicle category. The new BMW 520d is powered by a newly developed 4-cylinder diesel engine whose output has been increased over the predecessor engine by 10 kW to 130 kW/177 bhp. Both in the Sedan and in the Touring model this results in a perceptibly higher level of driving dynamics. For example, the Sedan now accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, the Touring in 8.5 seconds. At the same time, fuel consumption in the two models is reduced by around 14 per cent. Like the Sedan, the new BMW 520d Touring also achieves outstanding levels within its segment, with an average fuel consumption 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU test cycle and a CO2 output of 140 g per kilometre.

The BMW 520i performs a similar role model function in the petrol engine domain. Its 125 kW/170 bhp 4-cylinder power unit with High Precision Injection provides driving fun which is reflected in acceleration rates of 8.7 (Sedan) and 9.0 seconds (Touring) for the spurt to 100 km/h. The efficiency-enhancing qualities of the new engine are equally clearly demonstrated: for the new BMW 520i, the EU test cycle gives an average fuel consumption of 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres (Touring: 6.9 litres) and a CO2 level of 162 g per kilometre (Touring: 166 g). Both in the BMW 520d and the BMW 520i, BMW realises a level of efficiency which is still exceptional even in the smaller vehicle categories.

Only until next April, when threshold drops to 135g/km...

The article is correct, it quotes 140 for the touring.
The main interest is the auto figures, which I haven't seen before, much better relative to the old model and almost tempting.

I think it's more about working the UK tax system. Face it, they're going to think of new ways to grab your cash either way... Why compromise with a 4 cylinder engine for the sake of ?30 tax a year....

Great pitshanger

The F10 523xdA (four-wheel drive 2 l twin-turbo diesel automatic) could be my new car.

520dA MY '08 is a very smart buy, but note also the new 3 litre 525dA!
Not much mure tax but quite a lot more BMW.

Both with new RF smother rolling "easy roll" tyres, as of MY '08.

Rather more than that if you are a company car driver... a 525d sport will cost a higher rate tax payer ?120/month extra in tax vs 520d next year. As my company gives me a 'total cost of ownership' related allowance, increased fuel costs etc push the bill closer to
?7000 over 3 years.

Put another way I could have a 'basic 525d sport', or a 520d sport with ?7000 worth of options... having driven 6-cylinder 5s for the last 12 years and driving a friend's pre-LCI 520d, I'm finding it more difficult to justify than you might think...

Yeah, another nice cash-cow the Government has implemented...

Glad I can spend my own cash in the way I want without too much complication!
