And it should cure the habit for many of changing lanes without indicating.
Change the "reputation" of "BMW drivers"??

when switched on, the system is operational only above 40 mph.

There are 2 numbers floating around...

The BMW UK Marketing internal PDF mentions "(system is active >40mph)" on page 39
The BMW AG Extended Press Releases issues via worldcarfans.com says "Lane Change Warning is conceived for long-distance motoring and may be activated as of a speed of 70 km/h or 50 mph" on Page 7.

I trust the latter.

Do the metric to imperial conversion then try to understand the latter statement in the context of the former.

I see... they are rounding up the nearest 10!
Those Germans...

So it sounds like if there is a correct number it is most likely to be
43.497222 mph (aka 70km/h)

Well spotted... we don't use ye olde impervious system here anymore so I didn't catch that...
That might explain why the consumption numbers converted from l/100kms to mpg vary by a few decimal places depending on which day you read them on...

Actually the BMW UK says >40mph (which, while true, isn't very accurate) but BMW AG is rounding up to the FURTHEST 10 (assuming the source figure is metric).

Go figure.

Pray tell, how is 'rounding up to the nearest 10' different from 'rounding up to the FURTHEST 10'?
If you are rounding up, you are rounding up...

So the lesson learned is... if non-metric punters want to an accurate, trustworthy number in their own system then the best way is to take the metric number BMW provide and do your own conversion...
There are a German company and metric is what they work in (and the Engineering discipline generally).

I see you missed the point.

They have erroneously rounded (UP) to the FURTHEST 10 rather than simply rounded to the NEAREST 10 - which would have been DOWN and given 40 mph.

Time for the espresso?

I don't know if I missed anything ABC.
You conveniently choose to (elide) the word 'up' in your regurgitation [above] of the original statement.
Yes, time for that espresso anyway. I think I'll make it a double ;-)

Only a "schoolboy" arithmetic error by BMW since 43.4959835 is somewhat nearer to 40 than to 50 and the rounding to the NEAREST would have meant rounding DOWN.

I'll join you - extra shot!

So this works like a wake up call in case you are tired on a long drive and you start deviating from the road, I guess. The whole "training the driver to always signal" reason does not make a lot of sense but the "Waking up the driver when he's drifting to the side" does. But then again, how often BMW drivers get tired at the wheel of their BMWs?
