Lane Departure Warning

I read about one of the new options for 2008 called the lane departure warning.
What I understand is that the feature monitors that you are in a lane and sends a vibration through your steering wheel if you do not put your signal on before you change lanes.
Does BMW actually expect someone to pay money for this? I would honestly pay money to have it removed if it came standard. What an annoying feature. Who in their right mind wants their steering wheel feel messed with?
I wonder if this is some sort of future safety device that BMW is testing as a possible standard?
Am I missing something here dam I reading the description of this new feature right.
If so I bet they don't sell more than 5 units of this all year, and that to dealers who are loading up an E60 to put on the lot.

I suppose It could save your life if you fall asleep at the wheel during a long motorway drive.
It can even predict when you might be leaving a lane (before you actually do).
They are giving it away as a 'freebie' with their top-end models (like the 535d) ...
For others it would be an expensive option but I suppose people who do a lot of long distance driving might be interested in it.
I wouldn't pay for it myself... I would prefer to just avoid driving when tired.

I was driving with it a while a go and wouldn't pay for it.
I don't think it's a good idea to have a vibrating steering wheel and doubt it will help anybody that falls asleep, since his hands drop right with his head...

Sounds like technology for technology's sake... aka a gimmick!
I wouldn't pay for it and if it was offered for free (like in the 535d) would like the option to remove it so that I could free up one of those 2 programmable buttons on the steering wheel.
Does anyone know if it can be deleted on the 535d?

Yeah, I always thought curbs were lane departure warnings. Now those really make your steering wheel vibrate.
