L shaped brackets on doors?

May be a dumb question but anyone know what the L shaped pieces do on the doors? I thought they were something to do with the deadlocks but there's nothing corresponding on the door frames.

They are part of the interlocking door anchoring system for side impacts. Details in this doc.

And they aren't unique to the E60 -- I seem to remember them on the E39 as well...
