Hi all.

I have a 2005 e60 with the old key rather than button start, but i only got one key from the seller, so couple of questions

1. The remote on the key doesnt work so wekk and not from a distance and even worse when i try to pop the boot....Its it a replace of battery needed and is this a BMW dealer battery and job or can i just pick up a battery from a local car store?

2. Is there any way of getting a spare ky without paying silly dealer prices? I have head you can buy blanks and code your self but dont know how much, from where or how.

3. Nothing to do with key - is there a 12v powert sockey anywhere in the car apart from the ash try?

PS> If i had a manual i would have read it but done. I am sure someone will help me out here. Still getting used to the car

hey,
I had the same problem before i only got one key from my seller. you can get a spare from rallye BMW in Roslyn if your located in NYC for about 175 Bay side BMW charges 345 rip off but the key charges as it is in the ignition when the car is on so it will get strong as time goes by dont worry about that i dont know anything about the spare keys because BMW keys are cut completely different from other car keys

+1 on the key charging from the ignitition. Not to sure about your answer for question 2,

as for question 3, there are several other 12v connections, should be 2 behind your center consul in the rear passenger area, there's 1 in the trunk, and there is also an additional 1 underneath the glove box upfront, near the passenger foot area. there may be another somewhere, but those are the ones that I have in my car.

Also if you register at the BMW owners circle you can download a .PDF version of your manual...plus I believe you may also be able to get it on the root directory of this site.

Enjoy the forums and the car!!

You can buy a non-electronic valet key from the dealership for about $20 as a back-up. Then, if you lose the main key, you can fork over the $150. 2 cents.

PS: These keys are not known to work at great distances anyway. Yours may just lack a sufficient charge from being in the ignition while the car is driven for a while if the seller had it parked for a bit.

I thought BMW delivers the E60 with two keys...
So, what happened to the other one?
Did the seller told you?

In the United States a lot of the duplicate keys "disappear" in the reseller / dealer process or aren't collected by dealers when they take in trades. Seem to me that a lot wind up on auction sites like EBAY. One problem is that a lot of these newer keys are vehicle-specific, can't be recut, and require dealer coding to work.

I wouldn't buy a car with only one key, since somebody has the other one and has access to my car then...
