Yesterday, on business, I drove down to San Diego and had a horrible day on the freeway (debrisway)!! When I arrived at my client site and got out of my car, I noticed two abrasions on my hood, down to the aluminum!! Although I had heard nor felt anything strike the car, I now have a 1" by 1/2" gash right in the middle of the hood and a smaller one next to it!! Both are all the way down to aluminum...anyone know a way that I can have this touched up without having the hood repainted? The car is only 6 mos old and I sure don't want aftermarket paint on it if I can help it! Needless to say I was torqued and it was really bothering me. Later, on the way home, a small pebble strikes my windshield (HUD equipped) right next to the driver's side moulding and CRACKS IT!! I now have a 12" long crack right in front of the driver's side!! I just can't believe my bad luck yesterday...I'll bet the new HUD windshield is not going to be cheap...probably looking a $1500 - $2000 just to have it replaced!

Freeways...grrrrr

Thanks Eugene...I'm headed to the bodyshop to see what can be done about the paint damage and then to the dealer to get a quote on a new windshield. I'm assuming the HUD windshield is only available through my BMW dealership?

Sorry your car came under attacked yesterday. I know it's not what you want to hear but I think your best option is to have the whole hood repainted. Keep us posted on what you end up doing. Good Luck Buddy

I'm really sorry to hear about you car, what on earth could have caused the hood to get rubbed in such a way that the Alu is showing ??? . Good luck with the repairs..........

HotLap, my HUD-equipped windshield cost me about $800 to replace. The screen was BMW OEM. No need to use your dealer - most outsource anyway, and I took the car to the same independent installer that my BMW dealer uses for their glass work. Not cheap, but the work was flawless, and not nearly as bad as you suspected in terms of cost.

Good luck with both repairs. Sounds like you had one of those days...

Wow, you sure had a bad bad bad day. I don't think there's any other way to repair such deep & long gashes but to have them filled, sanded & painted (the whole front bonnet to ensure uniformity). Best of luck. Let us know how it turns out.

You should contact your insurance company..... They'll cover thew cost of replacing you windshield.. I know because the exact same thing happened to me coming back home from San Diego on the 5 freeway too!!!! Sorry to hear about that.....
Now I don't have an HUD Windshield, but i'd be willing to bet that you can get it replaced at somplace other than the dealer. In fact when i spoke to 2 different dealers about it, they told me that they use a 3rd party company come in to replace windshields for them.

I'm sorry to hear that, too. Hopefully insurance will cover the windshield at least. Many policies do - particularly since a broken windshield is a safety issue.
