Do you think it is reasonable?
Make the story short, I changed my belt tensioner then the following morning i heard some sound comes out the water pump pully.
i though it was ok until monday cause the shop closes weekends...
then BOOM... while driving i saw some smoke then pull over immediately, i saw the low water pump warning... then just "Aw... no.. fak me.."
you know what happen after, towed to the shop and 1200.. but luckily the engine wasnt dmg..
so my question is:
do you think the new tensioner could have been too tight to break the water pump? or its just the time the thing breaks..
now im hanging the edge, to sell it or keep it. it got almost 130k km 545i 05 btw. i drive over 600 km a week.
Ideas? extend warranty?

However, it is suspect that the tensioner was replaced and _then_ the pump failed. I would bet the the belt tension was too much for the pump - and the pump might have already been weak but this is what finished it off.

Sorry to say this, but that's why, I guess, pros always tell you to swap the water pump when you're changing the tensioner...
Sucks that you got hit for 1200, but good that your engine is fine. Whatever you decide to do with your car, I wish you luck!

These cars use mechanical water pumps?
I always thought the belt tensioner was spring loaded.....

Off the top of my head, I would say $1200 is extremely reasonable--especially if water pump is made of solid gold. I have no idea about the cost. Perhaps someone else here has experience with these expenses.

1200? How much did u buy the part and how much was lab or?
2 x new water for the coolen 60
some seals 10
one hose 40
100 tow
300 labour
had to return some parts back which not needed.
pick it up today, every looks fine.. need to take for a highway drive to see.
I think so too about the water pump fail after 100k. im sure many member here experience this.
my suggestion now is
If your car is over 100k change the tensioner AND the waterpump as prevention.
Thanks guys.
