Hey what a coincidence, a day after I posted that, I received my letter from BMW Canada.

Your dealer seems misinformed, or maybe they don't actually want to help their clientele, like mine..

From what I remember seeing on the news, this is a global recall campaign, (also noting boardmembers from America, Germany and Greater Scandinavia receiving their notices) so yes it should be uniform to all markets.. luckily, this letter spells out the issue very clearly for any "confuzzled" dealerships.

The letter notes:

"Description of problem
The issue involves the power assist braking function. A small amount of oil could leak from the brake vacuum pump into the brake vacuum hose. Over time, contamination of the brake booster could occur. This could affect the power assist braking function. In an extreme case, loss of power brake assist could occur.
The service brake control would still be available to slow and stop the vehicle, although this would require grater brake pedal force.

Description of repair
The repair will consist of replacing the brake vacuum line on your vehicle. If oil has entered the brake booster, then the brake booster and brake master cylinder will be replaced. The actual repair will take four hours.." etc.. etc..

From my letter (received today)

"BMW AG has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2002 - 2010 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series vehicles equipped with 8 and 12 cylinder engines."

Keeping in mind the dealer didn't have the letter in hand, just what was popping up in the service computer, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt - they've been fantastic in general. Thanks for confirming what to expect in our recall letters too - hopefully I will receive mine shortly!

I don't know if I can give the same benefit of the doubt to my dealer, not after all the run-arounds..

In any event, you should be ok

I was due for the brake flush anyways, will they be doing that during this recall?

Registered my car just over 7 weeks ago but they sent my letter to the previous owner. He was good enough to send me an e-mail, now I have to find the BMW dealer in GR!

Just had my brake recall work done and I am happy to report that not only was the vacuum line replaced at no cost, but they also replaced the booster and master cylinder. The dealer said I was only the second car they have had to do that for but it was done at no cost.
