My Ride: E60 - 530i 02/2006 Titanium Silver, Black Leather Interior, Anthracite Maple Wood Trim. Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, Premium Sound, Comfort Access, Comfort Seats, HUD, Nav, Park Distance Control, Steptronic, Heated Seats, Split Folding Rear Seats.
Post

I just traded up from a E90 325i to a E60 530i and I am sure there are other people out there who are considering a similar switch or are debating between the two so I am posting my thoughts for your consideration. I had the E90 for 9 Months.

The E90's interior feels much smaller in size, The E60 is much roomier and there is lots more, front seat space, back seat space & trunk space. If you have a family, passengers or like some extra room get the E60.

The Seats (comfort seats) in the E60 are much softer & much more comfortable then the E90 leather seats. not to mention the many ways you can adjust the comfort seats in the E60.

The E90 is much more sporty, The E60 feels much more like a relaxed, refined, powerful, sport able and mature luxury saloon that soaks up the bumps in the road for you (Here in NY it make all the diffrence) as opposed to the E90 which is gives you a tight, speedy, edgy, sporty feeling that makes you want to drive hard & race and lets you feel every bump in the road. If your a sports car fanatic get the E90.

The E60 interior materials are absolutely higher quality then the interior materials in the E90.

The E60 I-drive system (with nav) is SLOW to start up & respond to input, it is obviously a Microsoft product, it took me about 30 minutes to get the hang of it and I am quite a computer & electronics wizard. A lot of work needs to be done to make the system user friendly. The E90 I had did not have I-drive.

Summary:

If you are young, single, a sport fanatic, not looking for comfort/luxury - get the E90!

If you are mature (I am 22), married, enjoy comfort and luxury with reasonable sporting ability & BMW handling - Get the E60!

I am very happy with my new E60 530i fully loaded MSRP $59,295 Titanium Silver with Black Interior and Black wood trim, HUD, NAV, Cold Weather, Premium Package, Park Assist, Premium Sound, Comfort Access, Comfort Seats, BMW Assist etc..

The 530i feels more powerful then the E90 325i which has the same 3.0ltr engine that the E90 330i has (I think the 2006 530i has the same engine too?)

Good choice, the comfort and feeling of a E60 is really superb. I drove several times the old E46 and I never felt myself at easy, being too cramped for me (I'm 6 feet 4 inches tall and my weight is close to 100 pounds).

But what about your more mature attitude at 22? I'm 45, does it mean it's time for me to move to a retired people complex and switch to a (BMW) wheelchair ?

You're right, my mistake. I mean 200 pounds (about 92 kilos); well, to be honest during Xmas holidays I got a couple of kilos more, but I'm pretty confident to lose them again before next Xmas!

Congrats from me too!

I was in a dilema last year when it was time to say goodbye to my old e39. Wife kept saying that an E60 was too big and I should go for an E90. I test drove the E90 325 and 320d models but at the end of the day I just couldn't bring myself to go away from the 5 series.

As you say the extra room in the E60 suits me down to the ground having a wife and 2 kids, and the more relaxed drving style befits a man of my 43 years.

Good choice as far as I am concerned.

It is my understanding that the e90's suspension was designed for runflats, and that is why they seem to fit the car so well. It handles fantastic. The e60 suspension was not, if I am correct, designed for runflats and this is obvious once you change to performance nonrunflats. If you compare the e90 to the e60 with performance nonrunflats, then the difference in feel is not nearly as noticeable. Yes, the e60 is quieter and more comfortable, but without runflats it is much more athletic, and that feeling of complete control you have in the 3 series returns.

When automotive journalists make the remark about the e60 "Where did the magic go?", I think I found the answer. The magic left with the introduction of the runflats, and returns with their elimination. My e60 now has more "magic" than my e39 5 series had. It does not quite approach my e46 M3 in the magic area, but it hammers the M3 in the comfort, luxury, and amenities department.
