My Ride: 2004 545i - Bone stock... help!
Default

I bought out of warranty. I've had a few problems, some pretty minor, my M-ASK was major. All in all, it's cost me about 4k US in the last 3 months. I need to replace my headlight assemblies next (wiring inside is shot), so that's another couple of grand. I could have bought a CPO'd 550 for price I paid for the car plus repairs.

I knew the risk going into it, and at the time I was in a hurry to get a car and there were no CPO's available that I liked so... I'll never buy out of warranty again if I can help it. It's tough on the pocket book.

Ditto! But that's life. This is my first BMW, I have owned two Mercedes - and I wasn't sure how much I wanted to invest in a brand of car that I mainly know for being 100% reliable at cutting people off and not using turn signals.

Since I paid cash for my car, and cash for all the repairs/maintenance and aftermarket goodness, I found last night that I could have just bought a fully loaded 545i, newer and with less miles.

Bought my '04 545i couple months ago with 47,000 miles, 1 week out of factory warranty. Bought it from private luxury dealer. I have a buddy who works for BMW and was able to do an extended carfax inquiry for me, so I had some additional confidence regarding this car's history. I never considered extended warranty at time of purchase and one was not offered to me. I am also one of those people who rarely purchase protection plans on much of anything. From my research on this forum, an extended warranty would cost me about $3000. So I did not buy a plan and I am willing to spend $3000 to $4000 to keep her running. Any more than that and I am out. I should also mention that this is not my every day car and usually only driven on weekends. I was referred to this site for extended warranty but none was offered for my car.

545i, out of warranty with 61k miles. Only problem was a crank angle sensor that went bad causing hard/no start. About $300 to diagnose and have fixed. Everything else maintenance only.

I bought the car from a dealer auction. I'm out of warranty as of September. I have a 04 545i which I heard has lots of problems. It has 42k miles on it. So far the only problem I had was the alternator putting too much power to the computer. It was fixed before the warranty expired. Thank god. Next car will be CPO

My warranty on my 04 530i ran out on October of 07. Since then I have spent $100 on oil and filter. I have 67,000 miles now and my brakes are starting the squeak. My iDrive says they still have 20,000 miles left. I hope it's correct.

Hi All

I had my 545 for a week, out of warranty, perfect timing for the pass airbag issue to occur! My dealer looked after me though, wouldn't admit there was a design problem, but took a full 70% off the invoice (go figure) I was happy with that.

This was before I could arrange the aftermarket warranty, I paid NZD $1200 (about US$800) for $10k per fault/3yrs/unlimited kms offered by the AA here in NZ, so I am covered for all but a total meltdown, and even then my car is mainstreem (ie not an M5) so $10k would go a long way to fixing it. I am allowed muliple faults also.

The way I see it I am betting the insurer that it won't break - I am mainly concerned about a big electronic problem etc.

These warranties work well in New Zealand, I had a POS Volvo (V70 turbo - we had a new child figured I needed a family car, had some great features but what was I thinking?? mate, even the volvo forum members were mostly weirdo's I should have known!) anyhow the AC blew up, $5k job covered by the warrenty. Sweet I can sell it and did shortly there after!

Summary, when my wifes SUV rolled out of warranty + my car, in both cases I bought aftermarket warrantys. I love insurance when you get the bong of despair! (my wife still gives me greif about that bong - 8 years ago we had a '91 M5 in the UK, coolest car ever by a mile, but it liked the workshop!)

My 2c

Cheers
Stu
