On most cars I've owned, as you press the pedal more you get progressively more power. On most luxury cars, this translates into a very smooth launch from a full stop. On most cars, the progression from the point of first pressing the gas pedal goes something like this:
1. Smoothly pull away from the stop
2. Go a little faster
3. Go a little faster
4. Go a little faster
On my 545i, the progression is more like this:
1. Nothing
2. Nothing
3. Nothing
4. JACK-RABBIT DRAG RACE JUMP START AND GO LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL WHILE SPILLING ANY LIQUIDS IN THE CAR AND FRIGHTENING ALL PASSENGERS TO THE POINT OF HEART ATTACKS
While this kind of power is fun to have on tap, I figure a luxury car of this quality should allow me to not get whiplash when I want to move. I don't have a lead foot (when I don't intend to have one), but I just can't seem to get this car to take off smoothly from a dead stop or even a "California stop". Is anyone else experiencing this, or do I have a faulty system somewhere?

Yes, but don't you have SMG, Vegas? I'm wondering if it's a common problem with the 545/Step engine/tranny combo.
I may have exaggerated with the caps lock and descriptive verbage, but not by much. It's just hard to take off without it being "jumpy" and I'm hoping there's a warranty fix out there for it. Anybody with my model year/engine/tranny combo running into this problem, or am I just crazy?

I have the same problem with my '05 545i. I've brought it in multiple times to the service department and I'm told that this is how it is. Only smooth starts when it's in sports mode.
Deceleration to almost a stop and getting back on the gas used to create the "slam" effect. This has since been resolved after the dealer received a laptop from BMWNA and reprogrammed the transmission.
I'm still not sold that this is the way it is suppose to be. For what we paid for the car, we have to worry if whether we have a smooth acceration.

I've had the same issue also. It doesn't always do this, so I've learned to be cautious when accelerating. Pretty annoying. No change at all when dealer updated software.

Does this happen only when the engine is cold? Or all the time?
If the former, it may be normal. On the 545 I used to own (manual trani), I had to baby it until I'd driven a mile or two. Especially in the winter. Any attempt at vigorous driving before then meant my passengers thought I needed a refresher course at the DMV.
The problem - and I believe what you may be running into - is related to the engine software and emissions. Basically, the end result of EPA mucking and BMW tinkering is a very irritating driving experience when you first get the car going.
I've tried letting the car warm up for a few minutes, but that is normally not productive for a number of reasons. It also doesn't mitigate the problem sufficiently unless it warms up for awhile - like 10-15 minutes which is just a bad idea (if done on a regular basis) under most circumstances.
Since you have SMG, you may have an easier time finding an aftermarket software update which would mitigate or solve the problem, should you be so inclined. In my case, I finally got used to it and just accepted it - as annoying as it was.

HAhahahah J/K I read your sig to figure out what tranny you had and thats where I got the loose nut idea from.
But Sorry cant help you. SMG takes off very smoothly... But I have heard of a lot of people complaing about the steptronic slam issue. but you have V24 according to your sig... it should have been fixed like waaay back in 18 or somthing. Weird...

Wildcat, I have Step and dont have this problem when pulling away. Not sure what software I have though...
I do have the problem when slowing down with being unable to brake smotthly to a stop.
