It'd be interesting to know how many are actual sales as opposed to leases where BMWFS has to retrieve them at a later date.

Sales of 4,681 5 Series this month represents a 42.8% increase over the 3,278 units sold in January, 2005.

By way of comparison sales of the Mercedes-Benz E Class totaled 2,465 units this month; down 9.5% when compared to January, 2005.

Please note that I report only United States sales data.

I don't have any data specific to BMW or the E60, but for the U.S. in 2006 approximately 30% of all vehicle sales were cash, 50% were financed, and 20% leased. For high-end brands such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and MB a larger proportion of vehicles are leased (more like 40-45%) and fewer are financed (more like 25-30%).
