Detail shop told me my clear coat is thin. Is it possible to put a new layer of clearcoat on my decklids? I mean, its clear that the problem areas are the flat surfaces like trunk/boot lid, roof, and hood. Kinda worried because if the car is jet black and if my clearcoat goes.... oh my.

JUST HAD MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR REPLACED UNDER WARRANY. THE BMW BODY SHOP DID IT. HOW MANY COATS OF CLEAR ARE REQUIRED OVER BLACK SHAPPIRE? AND HOW LONG DOES ONE HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE WE BUFF IT TO A GLOSS, WHICH MY CAR HAS AND IT IS EVIDENT THE DRIVERS SIDE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE AS GLOSSY SO I AM INFERRING AND FROM WHAT OTHERS SAID THE PAINT JOB NEEDS TO BE BUFFED OUT. there is such a thing called paint restoration. not sure how much they charge for that.

on my e60 i have the same problem. It's Jet Black and it's the hardest colour to maintain. I can see a lot of small scratches and the colour look not as bright. clear coat is getting thinner (on my previous black BMW it was so thin the paint actually started to come off around stone chips) I've heard that if you give you car to professional detailer they can do it gently in few different stages to bring you colour back to normal. then i'm planning to wax it regularly and only hand wash it.

yes this is one option but it will not be cheap, then again neither is reclearing your car either.

in either situation be prepared to shell out some real money

there is no substitute for washed once a week, waxed once a month, paint corrected with sealant twice a year and garaged kept
