I've just aquired a 2004 545i and it came with spots on the plastic "shield" that is in front of the idrive screen. The dealer where I bought it counldn't get them off. I tried a computer screen wet wipe and it didn't work. I bought a plastic polish for this, and my headlights, which look sandblasted. the polish did nothing for the headlights, and it has a warning on the bottle that states "do not use this on navagation screens". I'm afraid to put anything on there that is going to make it look cloudy. I guess that the plastic shield really isn't a navagation screen, so maybe I should give the plastic polish a try.

In case I ruin my view to the Idrive, is the plastic shield separately replaceable, or is it part of the idrive assembly?

It is part of the assembly. Can you work out what the marks are, are they chips in the plastic rather than something that can polish out? Or tiny scratches? Maybe if you have a good camera with macro you can take some shots and some of the experts on here will be able to help.

One thing though, the plastic cover is not a nav screen. The warning will mean not to use it directly on the LCD screen so the warning won't apply. Whether it will fix the problem or not though, I don't know.

These are spots that are about 1/8" to 3/16" in diameter (3-5mm to those of you across tthe pond). It looks like something was squirted at the screen and then possibly became etched into it. I don't think there is any DNA in there, in fact I'll try not to think about it. To the touch (eeuw!), it feels perfectly smooth.

Is there a preferred plastic polish out there that would also help out with the headlights?

Have you tried a microfiber cloth? I have cleaned lots of difficult stains with it.
I don?t know about your spots but you should try, I guess...
