By the time you get your eyes off the i-Drive screen back on the road, you're already kiss the deer/moose
I mentioned this in another thread, but the one way I can imagine the IR technology being really safe and useful is if it was somehow incorporated into HUD, so you don't have to look down at the iDrive screen.

Its sounds similar to wearing mirrored sunglasses and driving whilst only looking in the rear view mirror.

Where's the screen for the side view or can you scroll through the various views prior to crashing into the back of another car!

I'll probably get one

I agree. Projecting it on the HUD is the way to go but as it stands now the field of view is too small for an effective image. The iDrive display is probably 3 times the size, it's certainly much wider. Anyway the first 2x4 on the freeway that takes out the camera down in the lower grille will take all the fun away.

This technology is really only good for campers/hunters or someone driving off road in their X5 or Hummer.
ROFL... X5 off road... lol.... even the Hummer (H1) off road east of the Mississippi is like watching a bull in a china shop. Maybe a G-Class or even a Defender. But at the typical sub 7mph off road speeds it's hardly needed to avoid a deer.

I'll hold out judgement until I see it in action in an E39. I can see how this might be helpful but it's not the best implementation. And if the price is $2000 it will price itself out of existence unless it's better implemented.

Agree with IRM!
$2000, no one is going to buy it unless he/she has extra cash and doesn't know what to do with it. $600 could be right. How many people in US get $2200 ACC? It's more useful than IR camera but no many people buying it.

You're right....I'm sure 90% of all-wheel-drive vehicles never see off road. I was thinking more in the lines of those driving in a deep fog and may need to avoid a tree or stump!!!!

I've seen X5 owners go "off-road" and onto sidewalks here in NYC for a parking space or to avoid a traffic jam. Does that count?

I agree, I have yet to see one 5 series around where I live with ACC. It is an expensive option. If night vision is that pricy, I don't see many people getting it unless you just have to have every option wether you will use it or not.
