Does anyone know if there is going to be a retrofit for this USB thing? I would rather do this than plunk down on the IPOD retrofit.
I would like to know this as well, seem to be getting conflicting reports in the UK. has anyone had it retrofitted?

Conflicting info here so I bought an IPod over the weekend in preparation.
Ehh...
The USB i/f works with both iPod (4th generation or newer models only, I think) AND practically any other USB-memory device!
But if I remember correctly, BMW does not recommend USB devices with built in harddisks though.
The iDrive will display all folders and songs on screen. It will also use playlists, categorize the songs into genres, artist etc. and you navigate using the iDrive knob or steering wheel buttons.
If you're into music, make sure you get this option! It's a MUST HAVE!...together with the HiFi option or better.

My CD player has been used once...just to make sure that it will play .mp3 CDs...and I'll probably won't use it again...ever

also interested to know if the USB connection can be retrofit.

i saw a post on here recently that suggested Sytner Nottingham are offering it as a retrofit but post was unclear as to wether this was the "old style" AUX, the iPOD interface or the *new* USB connector.

I'm also having problems with the IPOD/USB interface.

All I can get on the screen is the directory and a series of 4 letter words !!, e.g.,

aaba
abde
acge

I can get the menu up with Artists, Songs, etc but cannot click on any of them.
