Um, I don't think the 6FL option (iPod/USB) can be retrofitted by the dealer. If not, get the iPod adapter that goes in the glove box. I had it in my old 545 and it works well with the iDrive...

really? i always thought that most of the cabling was there they just had to "finish it off".

I don't think the 6FL can be retrofitted into an earlier car.

The "panel" inside the console is the cooling duct. They simply removed the cooling duct for 6FL cars...

kscarrol's advice is probably the best to follow.

can the dealer install this adapter or do i need to get it myself somewhere and have someone hook it up?

Dealer can do it for you. Some have bought the part and installed themselves but it will depend on the software version and there is no way to tell the software version. You can buy it and install, if it works, easy. If not, you'll need to head to the dealer to have it activated. I had the dealer do it as I required the software update...

I just had the IPOD adapter installed in my 2006 530 and I have a question the manual doesn't cover. When the car gets turned off does the IPOD aiutomatically power down or does it continue to draw power?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It powers down. I have a dedicated iPod for the car and it just stayed in the glove box. It will not drain the battery as the car cuts power on shut-down...

Thanks for clarifying. I have been unhooking it because I wasn't sure.

Don't waste your money on BMW's ipod module. If you want ipod connectivity then go for Dension Gateway 500, is superior to BMW solution. There are several threads here that compare the two products. If you need more info let me know.
