Ipod conenction....nothing shows up on Idrive

just checked a USB stick...and nothing happens. light doesn't come on or anything. Ughhh!
This is definitely sounding like a USB problem.
I noticed in the "AUX" menu of the entertainment portion of the I-Drive, there are 2 choices. "aux input" or "usb." the "usb" option is grey and appears that I can't select it. Is that normal?
