There are several threads on this forum regarding the home made dual intake. This is one of them:

So the air intake tube is a good idea isn't it?

Gonna try to find tubing to make one myself.

I have always been partial to K&N intakes and have used on all my vehicles with great success and performance, but there is a reason they do not make one for our 550's...it loses hp and AFE cant prove it works on this engine. What you have done so far is the best option and works great at speeds over 50mph. I dont think Dinans price is worth it! just sayn.

I agree... that's why I'm in the "quest" to do a blend of the OEM design which successfully keeps engine heat out of the intake air and use the aftermarket intake tubes which eliminate the intake tube which improves overall flow.

I think k&n realized that your average intake system wouldn't work because there isn't much air circulating the engine bay on the 550i. Which I figured because my engine bay is always clean. My Tahoe and Camaro and other Trucks I've had the engine bays get really dirty. Which leads me to believe that air is introduced from outside the hood, grill, headlights etc etc...

The 550's under Hood is lined in weatherstriping. The only air that comes in is from the grilles and probably gets re directed toward the bottom of the engine.

I guess k&n realized that and it wasn't worth making a $1000 piping kit to sell the public (like dinan) because im sure they woukdnt sell many of them. But why not just offer an intake tube and a drop in filter of their own and call it k&n intake? I guess because it really wouldn't be a k&n intake if they use the stock air box and they wouldn't be able to take the credit for it....

Woo! Damn I'm good! Lol

why dont you try and fit an intake tube off a 545?
but i seriously doubt changing the tube is going to give you any gains.

Happen to have a couple intake tubes sitting around at the moment. The top one is the Dinan 550i CAI intake tube, and the bottom one is the OEM 550i intake tube. Hopefully this photo will help you in your engineering efforts:

Yea... something like that is what I'm talking about. The 550 seems to have the air box a bit further up though. Might make it fit with a 22degree coupler
