just wondering if there is a noticable sound increase when the charcoal filter is removed from an E60 550i? and has anyone installed a magnaflow muffler but kept the resonator on? i want the magnaflow unresonated sound but i dont want to take off the resonator. Know what i mean? sound or video clip would help?

You mean the engine air filter - the charcoal filters pass clean air into the cabin.

I wouldn't recommend only removing this filter since you now have the risk of something getting into your intake/cylinder head that will screw things up and cause assloads of money to repair.

Recommend you switch to a DCI setup. You may notice a slight sound increase if anything at all.

No he's referring to the in-the-airbox charcoal filters. They are an add-on to the paper filter, and removable apart from the particulate filter. They are part of the evaporative emissions control system, intended to absorb fuel vapors after engine shut-down as I understand it.

To the OP - REMOVE THEM!!! Quick tho mild horsepower boost, and makes the intake sounds mildly more aggressive. You'll get part of the power boost you'd get from a full-on high-flow intake system. As I understand it for some reason BMW left a lot of HP on the table with the V-8 cars' intake.

As far as the exhaust question I'd do a few searches, and maybe find someone in your area with the setup you want to listen to. Very hard to get a good sound clip from any non-pro source. I went kind of blind into my Dinan setup, and am thrilled with it. Others are super happy with the RPI unit. Others are happy with the Magnaflow.

I went with the same set-up as this guy. Will be on the car this Friday. Not the cheapest route as I had to buy a rear diffuser for quad tips, but sounds exactly what I want out of it. He may be a member here, too. Not sure since I'm still a little new around these parts.

And yes, from the reading I've done, remove the charcoal filter from the intake box. Mine was already removed by the previous owner and has a BMC filter.

Get a k&n drop in filter and add an RPI scoop to it. They all work together, nice improvement.
