I just called my insurance company to remove my 2002 330CI convertible, and added my 2005 545I. My premium went down. Does that sound right? I mean, I am not complaining, but I was expecting a large increase going from a V6 to a V8. I am pleasantly suprised. Has anyone experienced anything different? did they make a mistake?

Not totally surprised. The insurance companies view the E60 more as a sedan (despite the power!) while the 3 series is more of a sports car. That view actually makes a big difference in rate schedules. The convertible was probably also more expensive to insure than a hard top.

The premium on my new, 60k 2005 545i is LESS than on my 1998 GS400 (now worth about $16k). For whatever reason, the Bimmer falls into the 'cheaper to repair, less likely to wreck' category. I'm not complaining.

I'm paying lesser amount than my buddy's 325ci (and we have the same yr experience of driving).. I guess the insurance sees a sedan to be a safer car to drive regardless of the engine.

I was also surprised when I switched from my G35 coupe to my545, my premium stayed around the same despite the 545 being roughly double the value etc. Not complaining of course - but I was expecting to get stiffed on the insurance when I changed to the 545 and was pretty happy to see it was actually about the same as my last car.

Apparently, maybe because of enhanced safety features, anti theft features etc. the Insurance rates for the 545 is VERY low..

I was surprised to see that I'm paying about 30% less on my new 545i than on my 04' GTI..

Way to go !

Great to hear and yes I am surprised, but there again, I am not, because I am told the e 60 five series did very well in clinical conducted crash test of 40 mph, and the all doors still open, and would not need the "Jaws of life" to cut the driver and passengers out if crashed at that speed, compared to others that would be more severally damaged, and would require more ALS emergency medical attention at that speed, that's like falling off a four story building, (ouch!!!).

Also I know insurance premiums are based on a persons driving record, maybe yours changed to a lesser $$$ premium because not only of your BMW 545i, but becasue of your a little older now, and I suppose with a excellent driving record?

Bottom line: Good for you on your car insurance savings$$$!!!

Later,

no, insurance companies look at everything. subaru wrx sti is a 4-doors sedan but they know it's not. so the premium is much higher than regular sedan. e60's rate is low i think because the car is safer compare to many other cars out there. luve60, most of the time people have to pay higher premium on conv't than sedan.

Mine also went down when I changed from a E39 (525i) to the E60.
