When you said "room for improvement" I bet this is NOT what you meant:

This is the new LCD screen LCI cluster coming to the F10+ newer BMWs starting in 2013....

What the heck is up with this new trend of shoving LCD screens where a traditional INSTRUMENT CLUSTER belongs!?!?

I know I am not the only one who prefers ACTUAL MECHANICAL GAUGES over tacky LCD screen and such!! Damn it BMW! What the heck!

I do like the instrument cluster for the LFA

but you know... I am the playstation generation... and I dont think it would look exactly right in an e60... but if it did I think I would spend hours sat in the driveway messing!

its not classy... just cool as heck!

i really like 80s digital clusters, haha. so perfect.

as far as analog gauges go, e39 gagues in every car would be my favorite. they just look right, all the way down the the font.

Great thread! And spot-on!

My comments:
- That E34/E39 is indeed perfect, so much symmetry and elegance in that set-up
- I actually prefer the E60 pre-LCI thick "aluminum" bezels of the dials, as well as the mechanical cruise control needle and the mechanical "rev limiter". I think its design in perfection and unique blend of simplistic graphics and mechanically-inspired logic.
- I test drove an F07 and a few newer models (X3, X1, F01) the other day - the new clusters look so cheap and nasty! Cheap plastic all the way! Particularly compared to my pre-LCI E61.

- As far as instrument design goes, I think German watch company Sinn is unbeatable. I am a happy owner of one of these and would like the same in my car:

It always baffled me why BMW decided to change the look of the numbers and hashmarks of the cluster starting with the e60. It's obvious that they're almost identical on the e28, e34, and e39, and then it got altered with the e60. It may have needed a little updating (maybe they thought that by 2003 it began to look a little utilitarian?) but I don't think the newer versions really improve at all. I thought it was kind of nice that they had kept that gauge style for so long, sort of a BMW tradition like the kidney grille or the Hofmeister kink (yes I am aware those two had been traditions for far longer than the gauges).

I love the e39's the best... even over my own e60 LCI gauge cluster.
