Engine is shuddering on occasion. Thought it might have been some dodgey gas I picked up a few weeks ago but no go. Now I have a check engine light and a warning on the I-drive about increaed engine loads may damage the catalytic converter. The shuddering comes and goes at lights and while driving. Took it to Autozone the read the codes and it's a compression error on cylinder 7. Since she's due for a tune up anyways, I was thinking of just replacing the coil and plug. Any advice?

Compression error?! Did A-zone check to make sure a good spark was occurring? Did they perform a leak down test to confirm you weren't losing compression in the cylinder?

Your problem could be much worse.

No they just went by the fault code that came off the car.

If you can, use an inductive timing light to check for a spark accross the #7 wire. Make sure the wire is firmly connected to the distributor and plug. Depending on how many years/miles the car has, new plugs, wires and a timing check isn't a bad idea.

A compression error suggests a problem with the cylinder valves, piston, or gasket seal. You'll most likely have to have a dealer or indy mechanic check it out. GL.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) these cars have individual coil packs directly atop the plug, which eliminates the distributor and associatd wires. Removing the fuel pump fuse/relays, verify a no-start condition, removing the coil pack, attach a spare plug to it, ground the plug against the strut tower screw, have an assistant crank briefly while you verify a spark occurs may work. +1 on typical compression losses. A cracked/leaking/improperly torqued spark plug, though rare, can also cause loss of compression.

Sorry to hear about the engine problem, Sean. Definitely take it in for a tune-up.

Sounds like you need to take it to a real BMW mechanic Sean.
