Heading into the gas station and suddenly I get an engine block icon on the dash and the i-Drive yells Increased Emissions. My car came out of CPO about 2 months ago (Naturally!). So my questions are:
1-Am I looking at a huge repair bill if it's an O2 sensor or the DMTL pump as I have heard those are the common causes.
2- Does Bimmer Clinic here in Jersey handle e60's they are relatively close (I'm in Parsippany) so I would make the trip if they can help.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thx
Sean

Hey Sean, did you happen to swap out your exhaust lately? I've heard that this could be one of the causes, especially by muffler shops that don't know what they're doing.

try and stop by your local autozone or any parts store, see if they have an ODB scanner they can hook up to your car....that might help pin-point the problem. It could be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad O2 sensor....definitely a lot fo threads on this topic tho...

Initially they asked me if I ran the gas down really low prior to fill up (which I hadn't), then asked me if I tried to "top off" my fuel by squeezing a little extra in the tank (which I may have done, don't recall, but certainly don't do anymore)... My SA said if you let the fuel get really low sometimes that will spark the Increased Emissions warning...
They ended up replacing the O2 sensor and thermostat (covered under CPO) and did not charge me the $50 co-pay because it took a few days for them to figure it out ( I was in and out of the dealer a couple of times).
Have not had the problem since..

Lots of things can cause it.
Mine came on it was the DMTL pump on mine. Supposely there is a valve in it that gets stuck and usually gets unstuck right away. BMW just replaces the pump even though chances of it getting stuck again are about the same as the old one. So if you find a place like autozone with a reader they may beable to clear the error and it may not come back for along time if it is the DMTL. Otherwise replacement I think I saw on my SA screen it was something like $500 or so to replace with labor.
Also many people have found just driving around for a week or so the error all of sudden disappears.

I had the same thing happen shortly after I got mine (CPO, luckily)...
They ended up replacing the O2 sensor and thermostat (covered under CPO) and did not charge me the $50 co-pay because it took a few days for them to figure it out ( I was in and out of the dealer a couple of times).

This morning went to start the car and the error has cleared itself. Maybe it was bad gas, going to run a cleaner through the weekend and burn out the rest of what is in the tank. Thanks to everyone for their help.
