After thermostat replacement - this is first time. Before thermostat replaced I got it about 4-5 times (it was averaging about 1-2 times in 6 month). This last winter was the worst one - was getting that error monthly.

I spoke with mechanic and he suggested to replace temp sensor (as being cheapest and fastest ways to eliminate one more possible cause)
Yes, temp sensor should be the cheapest and fastest to isolate the issue came from or not.

i haven't replaced thermostats on our bmw's yet, but on earlier model vehicles there could be a possibility that the thermostat be put in the wrong way. it would still fit but the valve on the wrongside. maybe bmw designed a failsafe feature but i'm unsure. it sure won't hurt to ask. just my 2cent. good luck

Latest update - replaced temperature sensor (it's actually called Aux Fan Switch in parts catalog), replaced expansion tank, checked coolant concentration. Was all ok. Hooked up to Progman and my car does have recent software loaded for MY 09/2003 and I would guess including SIB related to characteristics map thermostat. Will update if light will come up again.
Mechanic said to don't worry about it and if it will be coming up just keep resetting light. But I am still thinking to buy something like ScanGauge and have it in the car and if light comes up to hook it up and verify temperature (its a pain to do that math to get to secret diagnostic menu)

How timely. I got this message on the way home tonight. Can any of these solutions be done at home without hooking-up the car to the machine that goes 'bing'?

I do have at home both Progman and DIS loaded into the VMs running under Windows. But I believe many OBD scanners should work. As an example look at http://peakeresearch.com/

I got the same "increased emissions" in March and opted to try changing the thermostat...message went away and worked fine until this afternoon

Now with the same message and code I'm wondering if its the parts?

Did you all use an OEM thermostat as a replacement?

I'm going to autozone today to see if anything shows on their reader. I understand the emission related codes can be read on these cars.

Thermostat was ordered from WorldPac which is ultimately same part that BMW dealer would get, but in the different box.

I ordered from WoldPac too...Wahler product...

I use a Snap On Scan Tool - Solus Pro.

Today's Scan showed 2 codes:

1) 10189 Endocumented Code

2) P27B8 Difference Pressure Sensor, Intake Manifold Plaus

Anyway, I cleared my codes today and am just hoping they go away, lol.

If they reappear, I'll start to worrying...
